Nissan LEAF Fast Charging: The Secret to Rapid Charging Your Nissan LEAF
The Nissan LEAF has grown to become one of the best-selling plug-in electric cars since launching in 2010. Clearly, there’s a lot to love about the Nissan LEAF. One of our favorite features: its electric vehicle (EV) charging options.
Nissan LEAF owners receive one of the most efficient charging options of any electric vehicle owner on the road. If you’re interested in quickly charging your Nissan LEAF, there’s no method that’s as fast and effective as fast charging.
What is fast charging?
While other types of EV charging give power to an electric vehicle’s on-board charger, fast charging is a type of EV charging that delivers a direct charge to the battery of an electric vehicle. By giving a charge directly to the vehicle’s battery, charging speed is significantly increased. To better understand why, it’s helpful to explain the differences between the three types of electric vehicle charging.
EV Charging Levels Explained
There are three types of EV charging: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3, aka fast charging.
Both Level 1 and Level 2 chargers use an alternating current (AC) to supply an electric vehicle with enough power to charge. Whenever an electric vehicle is plugged into a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, its on-board converter transforms the AC power from the charger into a direct current (DC). This direct current is what moves into the car battery and powers the vehicle.
Unlike Level 1 or Level 2 charging, a fast charger converts AC power to DC before it enters the vehicle. Because resources aren’t being allocated to the vehicle’s on-board converter, the vehicle’s charging speed is increased. Of course, it also helps that a fast charging station packs a lot of power in its charging booth.
How does Nissan LEAF fast charging work?
Select models of the Nissan LEAF come with a Quick Charge Port, giving LEAF owners the ability to fast charge using a fast charging station. The Quick Charge Port uses the CHAdeMO technology to facilitate its rapid charging.
CHAdeMO is one of two popular standards for electric vehicles. Nissan LEAF owners use the Quick Charge Port to connect to fast charging stations with a CHAdeMO connector.
Using fast charging with the Nissan LEAF is perfect for owners needing to quickly increase their range while driving throughout the city. And the best part: EVgo fast chargers are compatible with all fast charge capable EV models currently on the market.
Nissan LEAF owners can rest easy knowing they have access to EVgo’s complete network of fast chargers, because all EVgo fast charging stations offer a CHAdeMO connector.
How long does it take to charge a Nissan LEAF at a fast charging station?
A Fast Charger like those operated by EVgo uses a 480 V input to achieve 80% charge in less than 30 minutes. With fast charging, you can charge your Nissan LEAF in minutes, not hours.
