CHESTNUT HILL, MA. March 3, 2015—Electric Vehicle (EV) drivers are now able to plug in and charge their cars while they shop or grab a bite to eat at Chestnut Hill’s high end shopping destination. Simon, a global leader in the retail real estate industry, and NRG eVgo (ee-vee-go) a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., announced today the installation of the new EV fast-charging Freedom Station® site that can recharge shoppers’ vehicles in 30 minutes or less at The Mall at Chestnut Hill.

“As Simon’s growing network of state-of-the-art electric vehicle charging stations expand to New England, they continue to show our commitment to delivering a more sustainable shopping experience that is also convenient for our guests,” said Justin Feldhouse, Mall Manager at The Mall at Chestnut Hill. “Adding car charging stations to the area illustrates the many opportunities we have as a company to incorporate sustainable practices into our day-to-day operations.”

“NRG is proud to be the largest developer of DC Fast Charging for electric vehicles in the nation and we are excited to begin serving customers at our first location in Greater Boston at The Mall at Chestnut Hill,” said Jonathan Lee, eVgo’s regional manager in the city. “As we build out the Boston fast charging network and look to build more locations with Simon, we are going to keep these chargers in the free-charging mode to give EV drivers a chance to see how different, fast and powerful these chargers are and how they can completely change how people think of confidence and convenience when looking at EV charging.”

The Mall at Chestnut Hill’s Freedom Station is now open and offers a CHAdeMO DC fast charger, that provides speed and convenience with the ability to provide a LEAF or Tesla approximately 40 miles of range in 15 minutes of charging, and a Level 2 charger, which supports all EVs and plug-in Hybrids. The Freedom Station is located in the parking lot near the parking garage and Crate & Barrel.

Simon is a long-time real estate leader in sustainability practices, including initiatives to measure and reduce overall energy consumption, water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Supporting the needs of energy conscious consumers is also part of Simon’s sustainability strategy. Shoppers can plug in to 152 electric vehicle charging stations located at 56 of Simon’s shopping destinations.

The eVgo Freedom Station site at The Mall at Chestnut Hill is designed to support both current and future charging technology, by serving local EV drivers’ on-the-go charging needs regardless of what kind of electric vehicle they drive. In addition to the CHAdeMO fast charger and the Level 2 EV charger, the station can be upgraded with an SAE Combo charger as more EVs with that charging standard become available.

eVgo is building additional electric charging networks across New England including additional Simon shopping centers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. As more Freedom Station sites are built and the network is established, EV drivers will have access to local and public fast-charging sites at Simon properties throughout New England.
